Tricking the Tallyman, by Jacqueline Davies, illustrated by S. D. Schindler, 2009 Knopf
2010 will be a Census Year and here is a great picture book to read with the kids and learn some of the history of the census! Follow the poor
tallyman as he attempts to count the people in a colonial town... only to be tricked again and again. But the tables are turned and in the end it is the town who learns the value of accurate counting! The historical information on the last page adds to the educational aspect of this delightful book.
Another picture book illustrated by the same artist is A Big Cheese for the White House: the True Tale of a Tremendous Cheddar, 2004 Farrar, Strauss and Giroux. Grandma gave us a copy of that one years ago and it has been a beloved one here for years!
Two great historical picture books!
